Weerawat ChantanakomeWeerawat Chantanakome, Executive Director, ASEAN CENTRE FOR ENERGY, Indonesia

Dr. Weerawat Chantanakome is presently the Executive Director of the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), of which main areas cover all energy activities, business, and transactions in ASEAN having close collaboration with the rest of the world in energy.

Dr. Weerawat was appointed by the Royal Thai government with the endorsement by the ASEAN Ministers of Energy Meeting (AMEM) in June 2004 to assume his three years tenure as the second Executive Director of ACE. Besides, he worked as a Private Sector Development Specialist, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and associated with North Eastern Polytechnic University as a Vice Chancellor and a Dean of Faculty of Engineering. Other achievements include being Senate Working Group Committee for Science, Technology, and Energy of the Parliament; Energy Committee, Federation of Thai Industries, to name a few.

Dr. Weerawat holds Master Degrees in Engineering from Ohio University, U.S.A.; in Energy Planning from University of Paris II (La Sorbonne), France; and a Ph.D. in Energy Policy from University of Waterloo, Canada, under Canadian Government Scholarship.

Architrandi PriambodoArchitrandi Priambodo, Country Manager, ASIA CARBON INDONESIA

Architrandi Priambodo (Chitra) is the Country Director of PT. Asia Carbon Indonesia. Her expertise in climate change and energy includes greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation technologies, energy saving and pollution prevention measures in industrial processes, renewable energy projects and development of carbon credits from GHG mitigation project, especially on Clean Development Mechanism. Chitra’s key relevant experience includes Development of Feasibility Study, Baseline study and Project Design Document (PDD) of CDM projects, Development of Indonesian CDM country guide, Development of GHG inventory for industries and GHG verification. Chitra possesses a unique experience relating to greenhouse gas mitigation in Asian Countries (China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam).

N. Yuvarak Dinesh Babu, Director, Carbon Trading and Head of Climate Change, ASIA CARBON INTERNATIONAL, B.V., Singapore

Dinesh has over 12 years experience in the field of Renewable Energy and Energy efficiency and specialized in biomass related technologies and applications. He heads the project development and carbon trading activities in the Asia Carbon Group.

Dinesh heads the Climate Change division and is currently managing development of the CDM projects portfolio under the Asia Carbon Asset Development Facility in Asia. He is also the Director of the Carbon Trading division in Asia Carbon involved in the operations of the world’s first CDM focused Asia Carbon Exchange.

Prior to joining Asia Carbon, Dinesh worked in an Indian Public Sector Energy Financing organisation besides running his own consultancy firm. He also served for the world renowned The Energy Resources and Institute in India in the fields of Renewable Energy and Climate Change.

Adam Burks, Head of Financial Products, Risk Management Department, BP SINGAPORE

Adam Burks is the Head of Financial Products for BP’s Eastern Hemisphere supply and trading organization. He has recently taken on the role, coming from London where he was the Commercial Manager for BP’s global derivatives marketing and sales business, bpriskmanager. Prior to joining BP in 2004, Adam received an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business; prior to this he was a US Navy cryptologic officer, serving aboard ships and submarines across the Pacific for eight years.

Philip NgPhilip Ng, Risk Manager, BP SINGAPORE

Philip started his career in 1987 as a Risk Quant in Citibank where he worked on financial modelling with various mathematicians and physicists. He moved into trading and spent the 90’s taking risk for Financial Institutions in the region. Philip joined BP two years ago as Risk Manager for the Eastern Hemisphere, applying his trading experience and engineering training in instilling a pragmatic risk management framework for the Integrated Supply & Trading (IST) area of BP.

Chan Ka KeungChan Ka Keung, Managing Director, CLP RENEWABLES, Hong Kong

Dr K. K. Chan is responsible for the renewable energy projects in Asia Pacific and corporate finance activities in China. Starting his career as an investment banker with Credit Suisse First Boston, Dr Chan had extensive experience in major international investment banks, and focused on the origination and execution of capital markets and advisory transactions. Dr Chan had previously conducted research on state-of-the-art semiconductor materials and microelectronic device fabrication in Cambridge University. His research work was published and quoted in major international journals. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree (first class honours) in Electrical and Information Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Electronic Engineering from Cambridge University. Dr Chan also holds a LLB degree from London University and is pursuing an EMBA degree at Tsinghua University.

Warren PackerWarren Packer, Manager, Risk and Assurance, CS ENERGY, Australia

He is the Risk and Assurance Manager for the Australian Electricity Generator CS Energy Ltd with prime responsibility covering Risk Management, Insurance and Internal Audit. The position reports to the Board of Directors, Board Risk Committee, Audit Committee, Chief Executive Officer and Line Management with analyses, appraisals, recommendations, counsel and information.

Mark Vonderheide, Global Head of Oil Trading, DEUTSCHE BANK

Mark Vonderheide is a Managing Director and the Global Head of Oil Trading at Deutsche Bank. He began work in the oil industry in 1982 as an engineer with Exxon in Houston. He joined Shell Oil in 1986 as an energy economist and staff assistant to the executive vice president for products. After spending a year as a trader for Shell, Mark joined Vitol in Houston in 1989 as a derivative trader. In 1993 he moved to New York where he worked as an oil derivatives trader at Morgan Stanley. He joined Hess Energy Trading Company in 1999, primarily trading and market-making in oil products. He founded his own company in 2003, Mport Energy, to arbitrage the OTC products markets. Mark jointed Deutsche Bank in November 2005 as head of global oil trading. He has an MBA from Wharton.

Michael LewisMichael Lewis, Global Head of Commodity Research, DEUTSCHE BANK

Michael Lewis joined Deutsche Bank in 1990.

Michael is the Global Head of Commodities Research.

Michael's group analyses the macro fundamental forces driving commodity markets with the ultimate aim of delivering directional, curve and volatility trading strategies with particular focus on the global energy, power, industrial metals, precious metals, freight and coal markets.

Before joining Commodities Research in 2003, Michael was the Deputy Head of Foreign Exchange Research where he had worked for the previous seven years. Michael holds a BSc in Economics from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Pradipto MazumderPradipto Mazumder, Head Of Structured Commodities - Asia

Pradipto is Head of Structured Commodities - Asia Pacific for Deutsche Bank AG.

Based in Singapore, Pradipto is involved in working with Asian corporates in the natural resource sector providing structured commodity financing and hedging solutions.

Pradipto has been involved in originating and structuring some of Deutsche Bank’s landmark Asian structured commodity financing transactions done recently.

Pradipto began his banking career with Merrill Lynch ( London / Singapore ) and prior to joining Deutsche Bank, he worked in the structured derivatives area for a number of leading financial institutions such as Calyon, UBS, Morgan Stanley etc.

Pradipto has a Bachelors of Engineering degree from Indian Institute of Technology - Kanpur and MBA ( Finance) from Cass Business School, London.

Theodore Backhouse, Head of Environmental Financial Products, Asia DEUTSCHE BANK

Theodore moved to Deutsche Bank in Singapore in December 2006 to focus on originating, structuring and developing CDM projects across Asia. Prior to Joining Deutsche Bank, Theodore worked as a lawyer with two of the UK’s leading law firms most recently focusing on leveraged finance and environmental issues.

He was first involved with Carbon in 2003 advising on documentation used in the UK Emissions Trading Scheme and is part of Deutsche Bank's 10 strong Carbon team.

He has an extensive career in the energy sector over 40 years. The major contributions Ross has made to the energy industry include:

  • Leadership of the development of a Demand Side Response (DSR) initiative for electricity markets
  • Project Management of the implementation of the Australian National Electricity Market
  • Management of a large electricity retail and distribution business
  • Engineering and management of planning, design and contruction of power stations, power transmission and distribution systems

Ross is Chairman of Energy Response Pty Ltd, established to facilitate the implementation of DSR in electricity markets and Executive Director of Independent Utility Services Pty Ltd who operate buying group services for energy consumers.

Charles FooCharles Foo, Managing Director – Special Projects, KEPPEL Offshore & Marine Ltd, Singapore

Mr Charles Foo is a Chartered Engineer (UK), a Registered Professional Engineer (Singapore) and holds the Extra First Class Certificate of Competency (UK).

Mr Foo commenced his career in 1959 by serving a five year apprenticeship with the Singapore Harbour Board Dockyard. He went to sea with Blue Funnel Line and Fyffes Group (Steam time). He joined Lloyd’s Register in 1970 and remained with the Society for the next 28 years. His last LR posting was Senior Principal Surveyor and Chief Representative for China.

In July 1998, he joined Keppel with the view to merge Keppel Shipyard and Hitachi Zosen Singapore. This merger was accomplished on the 2nd January, 1999 and Mr Foo became the Managing Director of the merged entity, Keppel Hitachi Zosen (KHZ). On 1st May, 2002 KHZ merged with Keppel FELS to form Keppel Offshore & Marine (KOM). Following the merger, Mr Foo was appointed Managing Director (Special Projects) of KOM with responsibility for Shipbuilding and Technology Development.

Mr Foo is a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (UK), the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (UK) and the Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers Singapore. He is a member of Lloyd’s Register Asia Shipowners Committee, ABS Southeast Asia Regional Committee.

John BampfyldeJohn Bampfylde, Energy Risk Manager, TARONG ENERGY, Australia

John Bampfylde runs Tarong Energy’s Marketing & Trading middle office. Tarong is a Queensland generator with 1450MW of coal fired generation, a substantial pump storage facility and 100MW of wind generation.

Prior to Tarong, John ran the Australian office of Risk Capital, a New York based risk management consultancy specializing in energy and natural resources. Before Risk Capital, John was a director of Aquila Merchant Services, a leading US energy marketer, and consulted in risk management and market operations in USA, Australia and New Zealand.

John was the Trading Manager at EMCO during the NZ Electricity Market implementation, has been a natural resources risk manager and a Eurobond derivatives market maker in London.

Ehud I. RonnEhud I. Ronn, Director and Professor of Finance, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, Austin

Ehud I. Ronn is a Professor of Finance at the University of Texas at Austin, and Director of the Center for Energy Finance Education and Research at the McCombs School of Business. Dr. Ronn obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Economics at the Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. in Finance from Stanford University. He has published articles on banking, investments, interest rate-sensitive instruments and energy derivatives in the academic and practitioner literature, including Journal of Finance, Journal of Business, American Economic Review and Energy & Power Risk Management.

Prior to joining the University of Texas at Austin in July 1988, Dr. Ronn was a faculty member of the business schools at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago. While on a two-year 1991 - '93 leave of absence from the University of Texas, Dr. Ronn served as Vice President, Trading Research Group at Merrill Lynch & Co., where he was responsible for the valuation and hedging of a wide array of interest rate-sensitive securities, from callable bonds to exotic options.

Since 1993, he has served as consultant to government agencies (United States Securities and Exchange Commission, State of Texas Securities and Pension Review Boards), insurance company (Allstate Insurance Co.), investment banks (Merrill Lynch & Co., Deutsche Morgan Grenfell), risk advisory firm (Teknecon Energy Risk Advisors) and energy-derivative software vendor (Nucleus Corp. of Texas) in the interest-rate and energy-commodity arenas. Dr. Ronn has addressed practitioner as well as academic audiences at Energy & Power Risk Management conferences and training courses. On May 1, 1998, Dr. Ronn was appointed a principal of the Law and Economics Consulting Group (LECG), Inc.

Prakash ShimpiPrakash Shimpi, Global Practice Leader, Enterprise Risk Management, TOWERS PERRIN

Prakash Shimpi, managing principal, joined Towers Perrin in November 2004 as Practice Leader with global responsibility for Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). Located in New York, he leads the firm’s overall efforts in ERM focusing on life and property/casualty insurers as well as the broader non-insurance corporate sector.

Immediately before joining Towers Perrin, Mr. Shimpi was President of Fraime LLC, an ERM consulting boutique. Until June 2003, he was President and CEO of Swiss Re Financial Services Corporation and a member of the Executive Committee of its global Financial Services Business Group. He was the founding President and CEO of Swiss Re Financial Products, Swiss Re Capital Markets and European Finance Re. He formed and built the company's structured finance and capital markets groups, pioneering the development of alternative risk transfer (ART) products such as contingent capital and insurance-linked securities, launching the market’s first California Earthquake and Tokyo Earthquake securitizations. He also started up the interest-rate, credit and weather derivatives businesses.

Previously, Mr. Shimpi was Managing Director in the Global Insurance Corporate Finance Division of Chase Manhattan Bank and VP/Manager of the Insurance Portfolio Strategies Group at Drexel Burnham Lambert.

Mr. Shimpi has worked across academic disciplines and professional associations to develop both the theory and practice of ERM. He was editor and principal author of “Integrating Corporate Risk Management,” which is recognized as a practitioner’s reference book on the convergence of insurance and capital markets. He holds visiting Fellowships at Wharton, the London School of Economics and the University of Peking. In addition, he has served on the Corporate Governance Task Force of the CFA Institute, and has represented the Society of Actuaries in several ERM forums and chaired its Investment Section.

Mr. Shimpi earned a first-class honors B.Sc. degree in Economics and Statistics and a distinction in the M.Sc. in Operational Research from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an MBA in Finance & International Business from the University of Chicago. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, holds a certificate in Actuarial Techniques from the Institute of Actuaries (UK) and is a CFA charterholder.

Richard JeffersonRichard Jefferson, Managing Director, Head of Commodity Derivatives Sales, Asia and Europe

Richard Jefferson is a Managing Director and Head of Commodity Derivatives Sales for Asia and Europe. The team has individuals in India, Japan, Singapore, China, Germany and the UK, covering corporate and financial institutions across the commodity markets. Richard joined Deutsche Bank’s Commodities business at the end of 2003 and spent time in New York focusing on US Natural Gas and Power derivatives and infrastructure. Richard returned to London to run Global Oil and Refined Products in 2005 before taking on responsibility for commodity sales in Asia and Europe.

Prior to joining Commodities, Richard was Chief Dealer and Global Head of Risk for currency derivatives trading, where he ran global Euro-block and Yen-block franchise books including a secondment to New York from 1997-1998. Before joining Deutsche Bank in 1996, Richard was employed by NationsBank CRT where he traded FX Options and FX Forwards. Richard is also heavily involved in the development of Deutsche Bank’s risk management and pricing systems.

Richard holds an M.A. in Mathematics from Cambridge University.
