Richard BennettMark Bartel
Marc Bartel is a partner in Heidrick & Struggles' London office and is a member of the global legal practice. Marc focuses on the legal sector, both in industry and private practice. He specialises in classic legal in-house positions and partner searches for law firms for national and international clients within various industries. Prior to joining Heidrick & Struggles, Marc held various senior management positions at leading international law firms.

Career to date: 1976-79 — assistant solicitor with Stephenson Harwood; 1979-88 — assistant group legal adviser with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking corporation; 1988-92 — deputy group legal adviser with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking corporation; 1993-97 — head of legal and compliance for Asia-Pacific with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking corporation; 1998 to date — head of legal and compliance with HSBC Holdings.

Darin BrumbyDarin Brumby
was appointed group IT director for FirstGroup in June 2003 and has overall responsibility for leading, developing and delivering IT services for all of the company’s business operations, covering more than 500 locations in the UK and 33 US states. Prior to this, he spent several years with TMP Worldwide & monster.com in various leadership roles and was also worldwide IT director for Morgan and Banks.

Guy DawsonGuy Dawson
is a founding partner of investment banking boutique Tricorn Partners. He was previously chairman of European investment banking at Merrill Lynch. Before joining Merrill in 1996, Guy spent 19 years at Morgan Grenfell, latterly as head of investment banking for Deutsche Morgan Grenfell.

John DicksonJohn Dickson
John has worked in procurement his entire career and has held a series of senior roles in bluechip organisations as well as a spell in consultancy with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Since September 2006 he has held the post of head of global procurement at Diageo, the world’s number one alcohol beverage company. Controlling a spend of just over £3bn covering supply (production) and demand (media and creative), John’s aim is to change the value proposition offered by procurement and to make it a truly integrated.

Professor Laura Empson
Professor Empson joined Cass Business School from the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, where she was director of the Clifford Chance Centre for the Management of Professional Service Firms. In her current role, Professor Empson focuses on the management of firms in the legal, consulting, accounting and investment banking sectors and is currently researching leadership in professional service firms and the challenges posed by new modes of organising professionals.

Sir Robert Finch
Sir Robert was appointed chairman of FTSE 100 property company Liberty International in July 2005 from his previous position of director. He was elected Alderman of the City of London in 1992, Sheriff in 1999 and Lord Mayor of London in 2003-04, and appointed Knight Bachelor in 2004-05 for services to the City of London. He qualified as a solicitor in 1969 when he joined Linklaters and was elected partner in 1974 and head of real estate in 1997. He retired from the partnership in June 2005, but remains a consultant to the firm.

Jeremy HandJeremy Hand
Jeremy Hand is managing partner of Lyceum Capital. In addition to sourcing and leading Lyceum's investments in Asquith Schools and Asquith Nurseries, Fox IT, VELO, National Britannia Group and Digica, Jeremy co-led the Southern Cross acquisition. Before co-founding Lyceum Capital in 1999, he was a founding shareholder, director and Investment Committee member of Duke Street Capital (formerly Hambro European Ventures. Jeremy is vice chairman of the British Venture Capital Association and is a former chairman of its taxation committee.

Mark Harding
joined Barclays as group general counsel in May 2003. He joined the bank from Clifford Chance, and prior to his role there as corporate counsel he worked at investment bank UBS Warburg. In his current role he has charge of two separate functions — legal and compliance. Mark sits with the Barclays management board and also sits on a number of other group committees, including the audit committee and the brand and reputation committee..

Bill KnightBill Knight,
Bill Knight is a solicitor who has chaired the Financial Reporting Review Panel since 2004. He is deputy chairman of council at Lloyd’s of London and a Gambling Commissioner. He is a former senior partner of Simmons & Simmons and chairman of the Law Society’s Company Law Committee. He is currently Master of the City of London Solicitors Company.

  • Joined Lehman Brothers in 2006 as European general counsel and managing director

Rosemary MartinRosemary Martin
joined Reuters Group in 1997 as deputy company secretary, before becoming company secretary in 1999. She took on responsibility for Reuters corporate social responsibility and became a director of Reuters Foundation in 2002. In 2003 she became general counsel. Prior to joining Reuters she was a partner at Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw in London for eight years, specialising in corporate law and advising on cross-border transactions and corporate restructurings.

Terry MillerTerry Miller
is the General Counsel of The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). As general counsel, she heads an internal legal team responsible for providing advice on all aspects of LOCOG’s operations, including compliance with contractual obligations under the Host City Contract with the International Olympic Committee, implementation of sponsorship and supply contracts, and protection of the Games brand.

Simon ParrySimon Parry
Simon joined Morgan Stanley in April 2004 as a managing director in leveraged finance. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Simon spent 15 years at Goldman Sachs, where his work focused on leveraged finance. Simon has an MA in Management Studies from Cambridge University. He has worked on a large number of leveraged buy-outs in Europe for most of the major sponsors. Transactions he has been involved in have covered a wide variety of industries, jurisdictions and financing structures.

Anthony SalzAnthony Salz
Anthony Salz is an executive vice chairman in the investment banking business of Rothschild. Before joining Rothschild in 2006 he spent more than 30 years at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as a corporate lawyer, the last 10 as senior partner. He is a trustee of the Tate Foundation, the Eden Project, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Media Standards Trust, and is a director of habitat for Humanity GB. He is a member of the advisory panel for the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue. He was vice chairman of the BBC Board of Governors from 2004 to 2006. Anthony is a law graduate from Exeter University. In 2003 he received a Business in the Community Ambassador Award for his work relating to homelessness and education.

Sir Martin SorrellSir Martin Sorrell, Sir Martin Sorrell founded WPP in 1985 and has been chief executive throughout its history. During that period, WPP has grown rapidly to become one of the world’s leading communications services groups. Before founding WPP, Sir Martin held a number of senior positions including group finance director of the advertising agency group Saatchi & Saatchi, and financial adviser to British food retail entrepreneur James Gulliver at Argyll. Sir Martin also managed the commercial and financial affairs of sports personalities and celebrities with the Mark McCormack Organisation in London.

Howard Trust
Howard Trust oversees the group legal, board governance and company secretariat functions at Schroders. He is also a member of the group management committee and secretary to the GMC and board of Schroders. Howard previously worked as group general counsel and board secretary at Barclays, and prior to that Morgan Grenfell Group and Lovells. Howard has an MA in Law from Cambridge University.

Susan WoodmanSue Woodman
Sue is responsible for legal issues relating to the structure, formation and ongoing administration of the Alchemy Investment Plan and the Alchemy Special Situations Fund. Prior to joining Alchemy, Sue was in private practice, initially at Clifford Chance and latterly at Wedlake Saint where she advised on the establishment of Alchemy. Sue is also chairman of the British Venture Capital Association's legal and technical committee and a trustee of Merlin.
