Reaching out to a wider audience

The inaugural British Legal Awards ended on a fitting note – a standing ovation for Tony Angel*, the recipient of the City of London Law Society Lifetime Achievement Award.

The quality of the judging panel, which comprised a potent mixture of senior business figures and corporate counsel, played a crucial role in encouraging firms, teams and individuals to enter these awards.

In his acceptance speech, Angel underlined the contribution the leading UK firms are making to the development of London as the world’s leading financial centre. It was precisely to help spread the word about this success to the wider business community that Legal Week established The British Legal Awards, which culminated in an awards ceremony hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr at Old Billingsgate Market on 28 November.

The vibrancy of the UK’s legal sector was reflected by the presence of 50 law firms and 30 legal departments on the shortlists for the awards. The quality of the judging panel, which comprised a potent mixture of senior business figures and corporate counsel, played a crucial role in encouraging firms, teams and individuals to enter these awards.

This year’s winners included Allen & Overy, Travers Smith, ASDA, Royal Bank of Scotland and Wilberforce Chambers.

Details of next year’s awards will be announced in the Spring of 2008. In the meantime, I encourage you to watch the *video tribute to Tony Angel, which features a star turn from Guy Beringer, the senior partner of Allen & Overy.
